“But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’”
(Genesis 14:22-23 NKJV)
The new creation people must learn this lesson at the earliest time of their lives. There is this dark side of bragging. Dictionary defines bragging as a pompous or boastful statement, arrogant talk or manner. Bragging suggests crudity and artlessness in glorifying oneself.
Bragging is acceptable when you do it for the glory of God. Other than that it is self exaltation. Lucifer the devil was thrown out from heaven like lightning because of bragging. He desired and attempted to glorify himself on the level of God. The Spirit of the Lord has commanded you to boast in the Lord and not to yourself; and in everything you do, in everything you say, do it all for the glory of God.
The dark side of bragging is when you used it maliciously by suggesting that someone owed you something and it is payback time. You would say, “Without me you wouldn’t survive, blah, blah, blah …” Or “I have helped you when you were in need therefore you have to blah, blah, blah …” Or “You would not have reach this pinnacle in your life without my blah, blah, blah …” Or “You owe me blah, blah, blah, …” Or “I did you a favor blah, blah, blah….”
You may say that nothing is wrong with that. Well, the world thinks that way. For the new creation man, it is a departure from the righteousness of God. This “in-your-face-bragging” when expressed out of need, is actually putting someone in a hostage situation. It is indirect demand to return a favor someone owed. It does not matter if the favor was owed twenty or fifty years ago. It is leverage for gain, imputing guilt in someone’s conscience. It is evil condemnation at the utmost.
Only the devil plays the role of condemning the children of God. However, the scripture declares that for where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty. And there is now no more condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. A new creation man has been set free from all condemnation, and he is at liberty in Christ. He has been set free from all works of the evil one.
Abram refused to give the king of Sodom the opportunity to brag sometime in the future. Abram knew that he would become powerful and overwhelmingly rich man. He would not allow any man, including the king of Sodom, to make a demeaning in-your-face claim, “I have made Abram rich.” He knew what he would become: blessed and a blessing.
The Bible declares that the new creation man never begs for anything from any human in the face of the earth. The new creation is the lender, not the borrower. The new creation man is the head and not the tail. The new creation man is overcomer of the world. His place is on the top only, nothing else. The Lord Jesus Christ never subjected himself to any power or influence and authority when he was on earth. He never bent over or bowed down to the system of this evil world. Rather, He conquered the world. The truth is generations after generations have attempted to erase the name of God in the face of the earth in futility. The Bible is still the number one best seller book of all time.
As a new creation man, follow the steps of Abraham when dealing with favor, money and gratuities. If your integrity is intact and uncompromised, even the gates of hell will not prevail against you. When in need, your Lord God is your help.
Psalm 121 says, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills – from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heavens and earth.”
Do not rely on friends and family for any help or whatsoever, especially in financial matters, or even in small domestic help you needed. The worst thing that you could ask is a favor from these people. Time and time again, people show goodness and turn around to put the “in-your-face-bragging” demanding a payback. Of course, this might permanently damage relationships with the most important people in your life.
The only way to beat this is to counter everything you receive with giving. Compensate them right away at the very moment they give, offered any assistance or help. Think about swapping. You swap goodness for goodness. Allow them to scratch your back, only if they allow you to scratch theirs. You must assure them, let them know that you don’t owe them of anything, period.
Do not allow anyone to give you a favor without returning that favor. Sooner or later it will come back and bite you big time. Come out clean. Remember, the apostle Paul advises you to owe no man anything.
Learn from Jeremiah 17:5-8: Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength…”
A new creation man knows this principle very well: never put your trust in man and in his resources. God is your source.
Only God will make you blessed and a blessing. Learn from Abraham.
